Paula’s Story

I am writing this on behalf of my 86 year old mother. She has Highmark insurance that she has had for over 25 years and it has never affected her healthcare choices. She is very happy with her Highmark plan and its cost and coverage. She has a heart condition that she visits a UPMC cardiologist for on a regular basis and has done so for over 25 years. He has saved her life several times and is managing her conditions with non-surgical methods. Now she is being told she has to pick another cardiologist or switch insurance companies, which is causing her a lot of unnecessary stress. He is the only non-Highmark physician she has. No one should have to be going through this—let alone an 86-year-old woman. Shouldn’t this be about patient care? She has a doctor that she has faith in, is managing her condition very well, and has managed to avoid surgery/hospitalization as a direct result of the care of this cardiologist.
I hope that this issue gets resolved sooner than later. PATIENT CARE IS SUFFERING!
