My name is Erin. I am 38 years old. I am a wife, mother of two sons, and a middle school teacher of 14 years.
I was diagnosed with severe Crohn’s disease at age 15. Over the years, I have had dozens of surgeries and procedures due to Crohn’s and its complications. Two of these surgeries quite literally saved my life. My colorectal surgeon, who has known me since age 16, has performed all of my surgeries. My medical history is complicated, particularly after having so many operations, and my doctor and his team were with me through all twenty-three years of it.
As a Highmark member, I am now no longer able to be seen by my surgeon of over 20 years, who has saved my life in the past. I am terrified of what may happen should I need surgery again—I need a highly experienced surgeon that I can trust with my life…which I had, but do not any longer.
